Description:

The Public Lands Field & Lab Assistant will work with faculty in the Department of Biology to assist with native plant and seed work. Fall job duties consist of:

  • Occasional driving to field sites on dirt roads, collecting field data, using GIS to identify field sites and collect environmental data, collecting seeds, estimating seed numbers, classifying soil samples, and a lot of data entry and plant taxonomy
  • Training will be provided
  • Qualified candidates will have a background in biology, and deep interest in some, but not necessarily all of the following: botany, conservation biology, public lands agencies, natural resources, native plants, GIS, pollinators, and/OR the intersection between technology and biology

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will be able to meet weekly with biology faculty mentors that include Drs. Jackie Grant, Rachel Bolus, Sam Wells, Matt Ogburn, and Karl Jarvis, but should also be able to carry out work independently. Candidates must be responsible, independent, and punctual. Must be comfortable interacting with professionals at the Bureau of Land Management and the Dixie National Forest as well as members of the general public. Biology majors and minors preferred, but other majors will be considered.
